4 Tips to Get Your Child Excited About Their Dental Care

Family brushing their teeth in the morning

When it comes to convincing your child to do their chores, it may be an uphill battle. It can be tough getting them to do what they need to, but this shouldn’t be the case for their oral health! It’s important that they brush their growing smiles, but how can you encourage good dental habits? Here are four simple tips you can try to help them build a solid routine they stick to.

Let Your Child Pick Their Products

One way your child can feel excited about taking care of their tiny teeth is if they pick out their own tools they’ll use. Sometimes, all it takes is a toothbrush with their favorite character or a fun flavor of toothpaste to get them interested. Just be sure the latter they choose has fluoride in it.

Brush Your Teeth at the Same Time

Many kids look up to their parents as role models, and your family might not be any different! By brushing your teeth with them, you can show them the proper technique and ensure they follow it. If you notice any bad habits forming, you can take the time to correct them now rather than later.

Offer Small Rewards

Another great way to encourage your loved one to care for their smile is by offering a reward when they brush. Every time that they do it, you can give them a point which they can use to buy a small toy, privilege, or special outing. The specific options they can get can change depending on what your child is interested in. That way, they stay excited about taking care of their grin and want to continue doing it.

Create a Routine

Do you have a routine when you brush your teeth? Maybe you have a set time to do it, or after doing a certain thing, but these can also be helpful for your little one as well! Simply talk to them about when they would like to start their oral hygiene. Choosing a time in the morning and night can help them know when they are expected to get it done. As they get their own routine down, you may even see that they are the ones taking the first step to doing it.

Although your child may push back on brushing their teeth at first, consider these four tips above. Try them out, and hopefully one of them works for you and your family. That way, they can build the habits that set them up for success later on.
